How it Really Happened
Permanent marker on paper
2020

The work How it Really Happened with the secondary title - How it Really Happened, The Devil's Cinema, The Price of Honor, In Plain Sight, Buried Dreams, They Said They Never Make it, Twisted World, Freedom: My Book of Firsts, Brutal Imagination, and Perfect Family consists of a varied pattern motif on paper.

The patterns take their point of departure in contemporary popular culture through an implementation of abstracted visual elements derived from global media. Here, both the title of the work and the pattern design seek to appropriate headlines that have reached the global (especially the American) consciousness, either due to a certain brutality, or because they put a curtain sense of justice into play, and merge them with their iconographic representation in later film adaptations (such as the harlequin crow pattern, derived by the narative of John Wayne Gacy, who in the United States became known as The Killer Clown).

On top of the underlying pattern grids, fragments from emoji’s - their eyes, nose, mouth, and eyebrows are creating a overlying pattern that alutes to the emotional and expressional systems used in conjunction with communication platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.

The work was part of the duo-exhibition Processen with Mia Helmer at Skitsehandlen in Faaborg, Denmark.
