Photo'perfexion
Anthotype
2015
The work Photo'perfexion with the secondary title - Photo'perfexion, Camera Ready Dark Spot Correcting, Photo Finish Shadow Primer, Telephoto Face Brush, Photo-Loving Anti-Redness Primer, Photoshoot Budge Proof Foundation, Photo Op Under Eye Brightener, and Photoready 3D Volume consists of a series of eight anthotypes.
In the last several years, international cosmetic brands ranging from Givenchy to SmashBox to Revlon have continuously launched new series of products with alluring names such as Photo Finish, Camera Ready, and Photo'perfexion. Through the appropriation of these cosmetic products’ titles combined with the alternative photographic technique anthotype (here utilizing the photosynthetic quality of the Cyanophyta bacteria to make an image) this series investigates how the increase of camera referential products impact the understanding of the self, and how the broader idea of the “image” materializes in society through the identification with one’s photographable self. The iconographic texts appropriated from the labels of the cosmetic products that are designed to increase sales numbers unambiguously refer to an ever-present photographic opportunity, whether the camera is present or not.
The work was exhibited as part of the group exhibition Cameraless Photography at Fotografisk Center in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Participants: Marianne Engberg, Mads Gamdrup, Nanna Lysholt Hansen, Nicolai Howalt, Myne Søe-Pedersen, Eli Ponsaing, and Rikke Ehlers Nilsson.
